The Story
Although versions of suspenders and braces have been worn for roughly three centuries, the modern iterations we’re familiar with can be credited to Albert Thurston, who was the first to make and sell the practical accessories from his boutique in London’s Haymarket. Sported by royalty, politicians and high-profile businessmen alike, Thurston’s galluses were attached by leather loops to support the high-waisted trousers in vogue at the time. While the invention of the belt and the technical ability to craft more form-fitting clothes has made the practicalities of wearing braces largely redundant, it’s a knowing appreciation for tradition that makes Thurston’s appeal so enduring. Now more commonly worn as a statement, especially with formalwear, the brand’s pieces are intricately crafted with luxurious hardware and sturdy materials.
