Burgundy Shawl Collar Lambswool Cardigan

- Product Notes
The perfect casual alternative to a jacket, this elegant four-ply, four-button lambswool cardigan is unrivalled for comfort and warmth. It is finished with a shawled collar and ribbed trims and looks great worn over a shirt or T-shirt. It is knit from medium-weight Scottish wool and shaped for a classic fit.
Anderson & Sheppard cites wool as the company’s favourite fibre and is part of the Campaign for Wool, a cross-sector initiative led by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales that highlights how wool is a natural, renewable and biodegradable alternative to synthetic fibres.
The Seventh Earl of Cardigan, Lieutenant General James Brudenell, is now more famous for his namesake garment than his illustrious military career. Some say that the jacket-like knit was engineered to save his hair from dishevelment but whatever the reason, this style warmed the great man and his officers through the Crimean War. The shawled collar, lifted from Victorian smoking jackets, was first applied in the Twenties and retains the louche air of its forbear. Contemporary collective memory moves swiftly to picture shawl-collared cardigans enveloping rakes like Steve McQueen, John F.Kennedy and David Beckham.

The Story
For heritage house Anderson & Sheppard, comfort and freedom of movement have always been of the utmost importance – values that have informed its aesthetic as well as how the brand operates. Founded in 1906 by Peter Gustaf Anderson and Sidney Horatio Sheppard, the house was instrumental in popularising British drape, rebelling against the straighter Victorian style prevalent at the time. That soft, fluid look – distinguished by a high armhole, natural shoulder line and a full chest – is characteristic of Anderson & Sheppard, as is attention to detail and creating suits, shirts and accessories of the highest quality. Now residing at 32 Old Burlington Street, these Savile Row tailors still have a firm focus on bespoke, yet also have a select offering of ready-to-wear each season.
