  • Product Notes

Originally designed for the Army Air Corp in 1922, the Chapal A1 replaced the cumbersome jackets that had been historically worn by pilots. With a body crafted from suede sheep leather, cotton lining and knitted collar, cuffs and hem, this jacket is snug in fit, constructed to keep the elements out. At the time of creation, zips hadn’t been invented, therefore this style features buttons up the front to maintain authenticity, as well as utilitarian front pockets and under-arm eyelet vents.

The Story

Although there are plenty of brands that create flight jackets, there are arguably none more qualified to do so than Chapal. Founded in France in 1832 as a tannery, the house was instrumental in advancing fabric technology in the area of aviation, including developing methods to waterproof shearling. As a result, the house was commissioned to create jackets for the French airforce during WWI and the Army Air Corp in 1922 – styles so sophisticated that they’re still worn and replicated today. Although now creating a wider range of leather goods, which are still treated at its own tannery, Chapal's flight jackets remain an embodiment of the house's pioneering history and exceptional craftmanship.
