Marilyn Monroe

by, Eve Arnold

  • In 1960, Marilyn Monroe arrived in the searing heat of the Nevada desert to shoot The Misfits, a film written as a parting love letter to Monroe by her then husband, the playwright Arthur Miller. Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift, two long-established superstars, were cast to star alongside Monroe under the direction of the seasoned director John Huston. It would be the most expensive black and white movie ever made at the time.

About the Artist Eve Arnold

Eve Arnold, born in 1912 to Russian-immigrant parents in Philadelphia, embarked on her photography journey in 1946 while working at a photo-finishing plant in New York City. Seeking formal education, she studied under Alexey Brodovitch at the New School for Social Research in 1948. Her affiliation with Magnum Photos commenced in 1951, leading to her full membership in 1957. Arnold's lens captured the essence of Hollywood's elite, including Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, and Angelica Huston, alongside her impactful coverage of women's and civil rights movements globally. Robert Capa, co-founder of Magnum Photos, aptly described her work as a blend of glamour and gritty reality, transcending the boundaries of traditional photography.

Remembering Her Legacy Eve Arnold

Images Arnold captured during her years spent in China in the 1970s led to her first major exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in 1980. The same year, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Magazine Photographers, and the National Book Award for In China. She was later made a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, and named a Master Photographer, the world’s most prestigious photographic honour, by New York’s International Center of Photography. Arnold published twelve books in her lifetime. She passed away in January 2012, at the age of 99.
