The Story

Made in Grenfell’s East London workshop to particularly exacting standards, the despatch rider has its origins in the heavy-duty trench coats worn by those brave individuals responsible for running orders between the lines during WWI. Realised in remarkable navy Grenfell cloth – a patented tightly woven gabardine that’s impervious to wind and rainfall, invented in 1923 by the brand’s namesake, Sir Wilfred Grenfell – this coat is a serious piece of kit.

The Grenfell cloth outer is complemented by a heavy oversized shearling collar (which has been enlarged and added exclusively for this edition of the coat) and a vintage detachable wool inter-liner from Begg & Co. The coat’s generous double-breasted closure, despatch pocket and hip pockets fasten closed with brass military snaps for ease of use when wearing gloves. The sleeves likewise can be popped closed for a wind-proof fit, and the coat’s storm-flaps are perfectly positioned to keep the rain out when the coat is fastened.

As practical and robust as it is striking, this is the only raincoat that the rakish individual need bother with this season.
