When Thomas Hancock went into the stagecoach business in 1815, he realised the need for an effective waterproof agent: rubber. Patenting India-rubber springs, he started an “elastic works” to manufacture items from the rubber. However, it was his invention of a rubber masticator that made the manufacture of rubber commercially viable, its revolving teeth shredding rubber scraps which could then be pressed into moulds or rolled into sheets. The rubber could then be bonded with cloth, resulting in a fully waterproof textile ideal for coats. Today, Hancock articles are still made with the rubber-bonded (vulcanised) cloth, and are all handmade in their Scottish factory by a team of expert coat makers. Only 100 coats are made each month, allowing only the most artisanal-quality garments to leave the factory and the cloth is bonded at an original Victorian factory in England.
