Rolex Daytona 16523$ 18,555
- Product Notes
One of the most coveted and commercially successful Rolex models around, the Daytona is a brand within a brand. There are Rolex collectors and then there are Daytona collectors. The so-called Zenith Daytonas have long been of keen interest to collectors and they have increased steeply in value in recent years. It’s an interesting pattern with Rolex watches – as new iterations of models are released, older versions steadily appreciate. The 165xx series watches have almost doubled in value over the past two or three years.
In 1988, Rolex heralded the introduction of a new 40mm case and a sapphire crystal in the Daytona. This was the brand’s first automatic winding chronograph powered by a heavily modified Zenith El Primero movement, the Calibre 400, which formed the basis for the new Rolex 4030 movement. The movement had a 52-hour power reserve and featured 31 jewels, a free Breguet balance spring and most importantly the automatic rotor. This movement served Rolex well for 12 years until, in 2000, Rolex launched its own in-house movement, the Calibre 4130.
The Zenith-powered Daytona 16523 is one of the last Daytonas to feature the modified Zenith El Primero movement, Calibre 4030 (distinguished by the seconds hand at 9 o'clock rather than 6). This movement is proving to be very popular with collectors and is holding its value well.
The present example features a 40mm stainless steel case with an 18k yellow gold bezel surrounding a black dial on a stainless steel and 18k yellow gold Oyster bracelet with folding buckle. The two-tone Zenith Daytonas are one of the best value Rolex sports watches and offer a great fusion of sport and elegant chic.
