The 1990s saw Los Angeles suffer riots, natural disasters and health crises, but it was also an era in which Angelinos responded with strength, colour, vitality and pride in their hometown – culture thrived, emerging artists blossomed, music infiltrated the mainstream and a strong sense of identity inspired iconic on-screen representations. Creatively, the city flourished, and it’s this sense of freedom, heightened by the area’s natural beauty, that Italian brand Canali has tapped into in its SS22 menswear collection, debuted at Milan Fashion Week.
Channelling California’s ever-shifting light, abundant flora and fauna, snapshot sunsets and contemporary architecture, Canali returns to a leisurely, louche silhouette for SS22. Tailoring includes wide-legged trousers, generous cuts, relaxed shoulders and bright shades that suggest a shedding of tradition, underlined by the Italian house’s use of suede and leather in its tailored jackets and bold prints in its shirting. Cinematic influences are apparent in the Navajo design cardigan and a nubuck suede jacket with contrast collar and pockets, which nod to the Western genre, and it’s an urban collection that feels at home not just in modern-day LA, but in any metropolitan man’s wardrobe.
