A Gentleman’s London, Episode Seven: Truefitt & Hill

In the seventh episode of A Gentleman's London, Tom Chamberlin takes us once again through the historic streets of St. James's, leading us to a landmark of grooming and style: Truefitt & Hill. Established in 1805 by William Francis Truefitt, royal hairdresser to King George III, Truefitt & Hill has upheld a legacy of luxury over the centuries, merging with Edwin Hill's barbershop in 1935 to form the iconic institution we know today. Located at 71 St. James's Street since 1994, it is the oldest barbershop in the world.

Truefitt & Hill offers an exquisite blend of traditional and modern grooming services and products, ranging from timeless scents like Spanish Leather and Sandalwood to contemporary classics such as 1805 and Trafalgar. Celebrated for its Traditional Hot Towel Wet Shave — a favourite for special occasions — the barbershop has catered to a distinguished clientele including historical figures and modern celebrities alike, from Winston Churchill and Charles Dickens to Frank Sinatra and John Wayne.

Meticulous attention to vintage practices and details sets the bar for the ultimate men's grooming experience, in London and even globally. Each visit transports clients back to a time of classic indulgence, where every trim, shave, and scent feels like a tailored ritual. The legendary barbershop extends a warm, homelike atmosphere, inviting patrons to relax in a space where luxury and familiarity blend seamlessly.
