Angelo Inglese For The Rake Tailored Garments
Matera, an ancient city lies just over the Puglian border. About a 30-minute drive from Ginosa, it is thought to be the third-oldest city in the world after Aleppo and Jericho. Down the road though is Ginosa, where skilled custodians of ancient traditions align with the history of Matera in shirtmaking terms. Situated near the ‘arch’ of Italy’s boot-shaped south in a stunning atelier is the house of G. Inglese. Established in 1955 by Gianni Inglese, the business is now run by his son Angelo. For Apulian Angelo, the ‘Made in Italy’ appellation is everything. Angelo still punctiliously checks every garment to leave the atelier, ensuring each product does his father’s name proud. The true essence of ‘Made in Italy’, says Angelo, “should manifest itself in excellence.” Crafted from the finest cottons, a G. Inglese shirt is artfully hand-cut, hand-sewn with silk thread, hand-finished, and embellished with hand-rolled hems and hand-stitched mother-of-pearl buttons. With Angelo’s unwavering commitment to the virtues of meticulous craftsmanship The Rake is privileged to partner with him on our very own creation, The Rake Tailored Garments.
A bon vivant until the end, Agnelli, the richest Italian in modern history and the “Rake of the Riviera” was the man after whom The Rake magazine was originally named. It has been no surprise then that Agnelli has been at the forefront of the inspiration for The Rake Tailored Garments. In collaboration with Angelo, we have exclusively introduced two Oxford button-down shirts into our collection. A style worn frequently by Agnelli, who is also a major source of inspiration for Angelo, we couldn’t think of anyone more appropriate to craft the shirts. The shirts come in light blue and white. They’re made in a comfortable yet durable vintage Oxford cloth and feature a button-down collar with what we believe to be the perfect collar roll as worn by many of the great menswear icons, including Gianni Agnelli. To complete the sartorial yet sporty feel of the shirt, it is finish with one button cuff.
To understand in more detail the level of craftsmanship and the inspiration behind the shirts we caught up with Angelo himself. What/who inspired this shirt?  Among my passions, is the task of translating the captivating and iconic style of various personalities on the international scene into my collections. It was nice to welcome the opportunity offered by The Rake Tailored Garments and interpret the Oxford shirt worn by the ''avvocato'' Agnelli. What modifications did you make to create the shirt? I mainly worked on the neck. I gave him the harmony and naturalness that characterized the character and everything he casually wore. By increasing the space in the front part of the neck, at the height of the last button, I ensured that the whole neck retains the amplitude and voluptuousness even when tightened by a tie. The collar is made in a structure that follows the movement of the neck while allowing it to maintain the shape you want, making the shirt a perfect option for both a formal and informal look. What makes this shirt special / different from other shirts on the market? It is certainly a special proposal. In this case, tradition and modernity go hand in hand. The model, the fit, the finishes will be able to satisfy the needs and tastes of men of different generations. This shirt is a pass partout that enables every customer to give a unique touch to each and every outfit he will wear, leaving him with a true piece of history of menswear and style. What are your thoughts on The Rake Tailored Garments and what we are trying to do here with our collaboration? The Rake tailored Garments with its proposals will give essays and fragments of history. Characters and costumes. And it will enrich its large showcase with “new” style with its high-quality made in Italy foundation. I am honoured to have taken part in this project. Success will be based on the strategy that skips the different commercial steps. Therefore, value for money will really make a difference.
