Doppiaa's bold hues pay their dues

We love it when a young brand comes along and challenges the hegemony of the big sartorial houses, because the daring moves of the small players can shape the entire genre. One such brand is Doppiaa, the Milan-based outfit that takes the classic tenets of the sartorial tradition and throws them in a spin by using bold patterns, exciting palettes and innovative fabrics. This season’s curation is fantastically tactile and rich with autumnal hues. It gets a double A* from us.

What we love about Doppiaa's aesthetic is the mixture of classic and contemporary, together with the fact that the brand is not afraid to play with bold patterns and prints. Knitwear this season is a case in point, as evidenced by a stunning navy cashmere turtleneck sweater which has been left with a long pile resembling something more akin to mohair or alpaca. Then there's the striking patterns and intarsia knits which can provide a great focal point to a look.

Balancing the more avant garde pieces of knitwear are Doppiaa's tailoring elements, which closely honour traditional cuts and colours. This season, they have opted for a classical English palette of green, khaki and brown together with houndstooth and herringbone weaves. The cuts are splendid, but the muted tones allow the wearer to add their own bolder splashes of colour and pattern in the way of check shirting, knitwear or eye-catching winter accessories.
Checks play a strong part in Doppiaa's offering, including a marvellous red tartan that features in both a shirt and rollneck sweater. There are also two excellent Western shirts - one in a blue and grey check while the other consists of airforce blue and plum - both great to layer with a plain crewneck sweater and jeans for a casual but confident weekend look.
