Online Editor's Letter: Travel & Speed

"The world is a book" so said St. Augustine, "and those who do not travel, read only a page."
Online Editor's Letter: Travel & Speed
Well this is a funny thing to be writing. The mere fact that you’re reading this, suggests to me that you’re probably rather curious about what an ‘Online Editor’s Letter’ ought to contain. Truth is I’m not entirely sure either, given that this is my first. A month ago I was but a lowly features writer for this magazine, but fate works in mysterious ways and now it’s my job to make sure that you, dear reader, are visiting TheRake.com because it’s an enjoyable place to be. That’s the aim anyhow, and what better way to set out on this new journey than to embrace the theme of ‘travel and speed’ for the month of June? To this end, we’ve got a wealth of features lined up exploring everything from the great rakish petrol heads and pilots of history, through to the most travel appropriate time-pieces of the season. Our Editor-at-large Nick Scott will be exploring the dynamic between two of the most famous racing drivers on the planet and our Asia Editor-at-Large Christian Barker Esq. goes to town on the Riviera - chronicling its tasteful rise, its tasteless downfall and suggests an alternative rakish destination for your forthcoming summer sojourn. New contributors a plenty have also been besieging their keyboards in preparation for June, including travel writer Matt Hranek, sartorial specialist Christopher Modoo and our Editorial Associate Charlie Thomas, who will be bringing you ‘The Impractical Choice’ – a regular column chronicling those thoroughly foolish but nonetheless eye-wateringly luxuriant items that you’ll want in your lives the second you see them. We’re also introducing a regular Summer Style Edit, so that in amongst the maelstrom of envy inducing travel stories, you’ll be equipped with all the requisite knowledge required to eat, drink, dress, travel, sleep and smoke in style. It’s also worth pointing out that for instantaneous doses of Rake-related inspiration, our social media channels will be firing out rakish snippets at full chat, the links to which can be found at the top right hand side of this screen should you be curious. We also have our Online Atelier of course, retailing highly exclusive, original collaborations with the finest artisans to walk this earth – and having just launched five new lines for May, we’ve got a further number of resortwear related releases to come in June – keep your eyes peeled. I hope you enjoy the new features we’ve got in store, and our slightly new way of doing things. As always, The Rake’s mission is to provide incisive, thought-provoking journalism that enriches the lives of our readers – we’re here to guide you through the world of genuine and discreet luxury – but this magazine has never been about luxury for luxury’s sake. Yes, to be a rake is to enjoy the finer things in life, but this is also a magazine for men of substance and taste, men who value extraordinary experiences and insight as much as they do material comfort. We hope therefore, that this month will surprise and excite you, open your eyes to possibilities that you were previously unaware of and above all, make for compelling reading.
